Having created the role, given it the relevant permissions, and assigned it to my user, i went to check the dev tools and inspected “Current user” to see if my user roles were …

Removing the role from my user lets me inspect the “Current user” object in the dev tools when in incognito without it crashing, so i guess the problem is with the role. Dev tools are still not appearing in my "normal” chrome instance tho.
